The Black Bags
A short story by Mohamed FATOUH
Translated from Arabic by ABDELLATIF RHESRI
The idea did not appeal to her. Nothing
guaranteed that it would be successful. "We won't ride the sea. We would eat bread and
water, but I wouldn't expose my flesh and blood to danger". That was her
decision.
He kept on
tempting her with the dream of migrating to the other shore of the
Mediterranean, and his cousin's willingness to shelter them and help him find a
job with a decent salary that would guarantee them a good life, and enable him to save enough
money to build a house similar to the one built by their neighbour at the entrance
of the village.
His dream
became her own, after some lean months of hopelessness and despair. So, they
set off on their adventure in secret.
He got so
extremely exhausted that he no longer felt his body lying on the beach. He had
struggled with the waves for countless hours before the sea sent him off to the
shore. He heard some loud chat. He got attentive, and realized that he had not
left the southern shore of the Mediterranean. He opened his eyes.
There were
some guards and civil protection men wrapping some bodies into black bags. He
managed to stand up after making a terrible effort. He felt like the ground was
shaking under his feet. His heartbeats quickened. He felt spasmodic and
nauseated. He went ahead with difficulty, then scurried like a fool searching
in the bags for his little daughter and her mother.
