A short story by Ameera Sarem
Translated from Arabic by ABDELLATIF RHESRI
Feet mobbed around a feast made of the rich ones' leftovers in the holy month، which they had looted from the industrious poor ones, claiming; "We're giving you some alms to purify our wealth. So, eat".
Their hands would get raised high praying for them, not knowing that the feast had been made from their own pockets.
After they had finished, they would kiss the guilty hands and get out overjoyed, forgetting their own hungry families.
The wife shouted; "What did you bring to the kids?"
They gave it to us only.
The whole scene testified to their false generosity.
"Fie! How could I accept that? I shouldn't have gone to those filthy rascals.
Oh, after you have filled your stomach?
May the curse of God fall upon you and your companions.
The wife kept saying to herself; "Oh God! What shall I do?
He decided to go to a merchant in the village and borrow some money from him in order to support his kids. "He presented plenty of food in front of the photographers, so he won't let me down".
As he got around the palace, the dogs barked at him. Then, a huge man with a large moustache came out asking; "What do you want?"
A loan.
He guffawed and said; " My boss wouldn't squander his money. Do you want him to lend you? Why don't you look for a job?
At that moment, the boss came out saying disdainfully ; "What do you want?"
Some money.
First, you have to sell your land to me and sign to that.
He agreed and said after a moment of silence; "I won't let my wife gloat on me".
So, he took the money after he had wasted his identity، boasting of the leftovers he had got. Since that moment, he was trodden on by feet.
