The Mother
School
A short story
by Arkan El Kaissi
Translated
from Arabic by ABDELLATIF RHESRI
He
shamelessly expelled his mother from his house, forgetting all her favours, and
fulfilling his luxuriant wife's wish. The mother got heartbroken and was taken
in by the neighbours who granted her a room to stay in and were kindly generous
to her. He would pass everyday by her door. He saw her raising her hands towards
the sky and thought she was praying against him, so he scorned her.
Days went by.
He had an accident that crippled and paralyzed him. When his mother heard the
news, she was so shocked that she lost control of herself. She went out
bare-foot running towards his house. She stood at the door and was surprised to
be cruelly prevented from entering by that ungrateful woman. She begged her to
let her in to see her son, but she turned her down. She rudely chased her away,
instead.
As time went
by, his wife got fed up with him. He became an unbearable burden on her. When
she put him in a car and sent him to his mother, the latter was overjoyed in
spite of all the painful wounds. Their eyes met; the mother's eyes indicated
tenderness, love and longing, and the son's eyes showed remorse for his
negligence and ungratefulness.
The old woman
started sniffing and kissing him. She took him into the house, and made him
have a bath. After only a few days, he felt the difference. He felt interest,
care and cleanliness. His body became fragrant after it had been filthy before.
Mom, I don't
know how to atone for my guilt. How can I reward you in my state of disability?
Now I know that you were praying for me not against me when I used to pass by
you.
Son, do you
think a mother is as cruel as a wife? I was only praying God to forgive you and
guide you to the right path.
Now, thank
God, you're back to me. I'm glad that you've realized what is right.
Mom, what
about my wife? Shall I
punish her?
Never mind,
son. Let her fate punish her for what she has done.
